20-Somethings and Mental Illness

20-Somethings and Mental Illness

Finally, a study has proven what we all knew instinctively before: teenagers haven't cornered the market on angst. One in five young adults in this country suffers from a personality disorder, including OCD, anti-social problems and anxiety disorders.

I've always said that being in your early twenties is way more stressful than being a teen, especially since the social confusion and body changes are constant throughout both periods, but in your twenties you have the added responsibility of making your own decisions.

My favorite part of the above article is this:

"For many, young adulthood is characterized by the pursuit of greater educational opportunities and employment prospects, development of personal relationships, and for some, parenthood," the authors said. These circumstances, they said, can result in stress that triggers the start or recurrence of psychiatric problems.

Explains a lot about my psychotic self, eh? :P

  • Only one in five, huh? Hmmmm.

  • Nice that a study can confirm this, but it's really a no-brainer. Many kids graduate from college and are thrust into a tough world to sink or swim. While most young adults have gathered a nice collection of handy dandy tools e.g. diploma, logic, reason - it's not always enough. It's frightening to have so much responsibility especially if marriage and/or children enter the picture. Parents are in a tough position at this point as well, because while they have also gathered a nice tool chest, they are keenly aware that they must strike a fine balance with their young adult children. For me, I would rather give my adult children a cash allowance every week - after they no longer need it, than to give them one when they do. I know that sounds callous. But, I need my children to demonstrate to me that they are capable. Otherwise I could risk negatively enabling them. And that's not a road I want my children to travel.

  • So in the meantime, while some of my children struggle(with likely similar things as you), I am nearby watching unsuspectingly over them, pulling for them if they fall, urging them to get back up. Occasionally, I send in reinforcement, but only if they ask. I've tried also to equip them with a strong faith foundation. Your post reminded me of the the scripture in Luke 12:48, "...And to whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required..." ASV

  • Hang in there, I bet there's some unsuspecting spectators in your corner as well. ;)
