More Whiny Anglicans...

And in my ongoing engagement in the current schism splitting my church apart...

Before now, the dissidents who split from the Episcopal Church joined up with Anglican dioceses in Africa and South America. Now, it appears, they want to set up their own rival North American diocese.

I just don't get it. If you don't agree with the principles and values of the Episcopal Church, then don't be an Episcopalian. There are about a million different denominations of Christianity— pick a new one, and leave. And if you don't want to leave because you love the Episcopal Church, then stay and make your voice heard in the Anglican communion. But how can you justify leaving the church and then trying to create a NEW EPISCOPAL CHURCH?! Either you're an Episcopalian, or you're not.

It's so childish to say, "Well, we disagree, so I'm going to go take my toys and play over there." What mean-spirited people. The Episcopal Church sometimes interprets scripture differently than I do, but I don't go off in a huff about it, do I? Why whine about this stuff? Why not just talk it out and explain how you feel and see if you can't persuade others?

Sheesh. If they're going to act like this, then I say good riddance to bad congregations.

  • I agree with you although I struggle with the notion that this seems to be the main mess in organized traditional religion. There are so many variations and I question if people want the deviation from the main theme.

  • Well, if people will leave our own church in a huff over replacing a few pews with chairs, I guess this doesn't surprise me either. But yeah -- it's not like there's a shortage of other denominations out there. I have to say this is one of the reasons (among other more personal ones) that I never have and probably never will espouse a formal religion for myself. It so easily becomes legalistic, petty and divisive, when as far as I understand, Christ transcended all three.

  • I do not know the specifics about your situation. But often there are church assets involved and often times they are considerable. I have seen and read of churches breaking from their denomination and wanting to claim physical assets through a ocean of court challenges. I have never experienced it from within, but I have known a number of people who have--often doctrinal issues so polarize the church that even friends have a hard time being friendly. Leaving a church full of people you love for another has to be a lot like a painful divorce. I wish that on no one.
